Although they can occasionally appear on the oral mucosa, gums, or hard palate, this is rare. Cold sores are usually painful, and the pain begins a few days before the lesion appears. These blisters burst within hours and then form scabs, healing within 7-10 days.

CAUSE: Cold sores are caused by the activation of the herpes simplex virus. This virus remains dormant in individuals who have previously been infected and becomes active due to factors such as stress, fever, trauma, physical exhaustion, hormonal changes, and exposure to sunlight. Recurrent lesions tend to occur in the same location.

After a cold sore bursts, the period until complete healing is the most critical time for the spread of the infection. The virus can also spread to the eyes, sexual organs, and other individuals.

PREVENTION RECOMMENDATIONS:

When a lesion appears, protect mucous membrane-containing areas such as the inside of the mouth, nasal passages, and sexual regions from infection.

Do not squeeze or pop the cold sore.

Wash your hands thoroughly before touching others or areas like the eyes or sexual regions.

Despite all precautions, remember that the herpes virus can spread even without visible cold sores.

TREATMENT:

Treatment is generally symptom-focused. Antiviral ointments can be applied before lesions appear. To prevent secondary infections, do not remove the scabs on the lesions, and use antiseptic and pain-relieving sprays to reduce pain.

CANKER SORE (APHTHOUS ULCER)

Canker sores are small, superficial ulcers ranging from 2-5 mm in diameter, typically appearing on the tongue, soft palate, inner parts of the lips, and cheeks. They are quite painful and usually heal within 7-10 days.

CAUSE:

The exact causes of canker sores are not definitively known, but they are believed to result from local immune responses triggered by factors such as local trauma, exposure to acidic foods (like tomatoes, citrus fruits, etc.), and irritation from mucosal areas. They can appear singly or in multiple numbers.

Since the cause is not bacterial or viral, there is no regional spread or transmission to others.

TREATMENT:

Treatment focuses on addressing pain and difficulties with eating. It is important to protect against infection. Topical corticosteroid ointments have been shown to be beneficial. Pain relievers, antiseptic, and pain-relieving mouthwashes can be used. Currently, there is no definitive cure.

OTHER ULCERS

For oral ulcers that do not heal within two weeks, it is essential to seek medical attention.

Middle ear infections can cause severe pain that interferes with speaking and eating and can recur intermittently in many healthy individuals.
